Karma Brazell lives in American Canyon,
California and is a doula involved with an important outreach to our
military families. What is a doula? A doula is specially trained to give
informational, emotional, and physical support to women during childbirth. A
doula does not perform medical tasks, but is trained to provide uninterrupted
support to a mother in labor.
Operation Special Delivery (or OSD) provides volunteer doulas for
pregnant women whose husbands or partners are deployed at the time that they are
due to give birth.
Why military moms? Because OSD believes that no one should give birth
without support, especially the women who are giving birth while these fathers
are making such a great sacrifice for our country and our freedom. We just want
to try to give back in
appreciation.
Typically the doula will meet with the pregnant woman once or twice before birth
to establish a good report and get an idea of the mothers wishes for the birth.
When the woman goes into labor, the doula will join her when she feels she needs
it and will provide continuous support until the birth of the baby. She usually
stays for an hour or so after the birth to assist with breastfeeding and getting
settled in. There is one last visit postpartum to see how mom and baby are
adjusting and to make sure mom has all the resources she needs.
If you qualify for an OSD birth or know someone who does, call or email
the OSD headquarters and they will set you up with a volunteer in your
area. Doulas from across the US are giving their heart and hands to this
important task.
